CHARACTERISTICS

It is a small dog, with a square appearance. Its body length is equal to its height, not exceeding 40 cm. on the cross. It is a dog that reflects a lot of vivacity.

Its head has a high port with very steep ears. The coat should be short and shiny, the coloration coats recognized by the standard are: tan black, tan tan, black tricolor and brown tricolor.

FUNCTIONALITY

It is included in the group of hunting dogs since this is its main function, standing out especially in hunting rabbits and rats, showing great tenacity and passion.

Its small size, its courage, its intelligence and physical resistance make it a great companion animal and at the same time an excellent gardian.

General characteristics

The Majorcan dog is a small dog, well below the average size of the canine species. Its height does not reach 40 centimeters and 32 – 36 centimeters in males and 29 – 33 centimeters in females are normal.

Its weight is low, from 3.5 to 5 kilos in males, and from 3 to 4 kilos in females. Bearing in mind that the profile of the head, skull and face is straight, it can be said that according to Baron’s classification system, the Majorcan dog is rectilinear, brevilinear and ultraellipometric.

It is an animal with a very lively, loving, very nervous and susceptible temperament. Great guard of the house, since it suddenly warns the owner. Great hunter of rats and rabbits, since it enters through any sinkhole, it jumps the walls very easily, apart from the fact that it runs very quickly. It is also an excellent companion animal.

Regional characteristics

HEAD: Slightly prominent, but in harmonic proportion to the body. The face is narrow and sharply pointed, with well marked masseters. The nose is small and black, and this is its usual colour, although there is a correlation between the color of the nose, the lips and the eyes, which are similar. The lips are thin and collected, well attached to the gums. The marinade is not marked at all and is usually black in color, like the nose and other mucous membranes. Teeth are white, healthy, strong and correctly positioned. The bite is in the manner called with scissors. The palate is also black or brown in color. The eyes are round, large, somewhat prominent, and horizontal and frontal. Its color is dark amber. The eyelids are thin, well attached to the eye and black. The ears are well erect, of medium size, triangular, mobile, set high and protrude from the outer lateral plane of the head when the animal is alert.

NECK: The neck is robust and cylindrical, of low birth and is an extension of the chest upwards and forwards. Its robustness gives a feeling of agility and it is the same length as the head.

BODY: It is quadrangular in appearance in males, while in females it is more elongated. The musculature is firm, long and marked. The withers are not marked and have the same height as the croup. The chest is broad and rounded with the point of the sternum fully integrated into the curve it forms. The sternal line (post of the chest) coincides with the height of the elbows. The shoulders are oblique, the thoracolumbar line is horizontal with the loin, strong, straight and short. The belly is tucked in, the croup rounded and the ribs arched.

TAIL: A characteristic of this breed is that 20% are born without a tail, with a small vertebra flush with the body. In the breed standard, specimens with or without tail are admitted, in compliance with the European regulations that refer to amputations for aesthetic reasons.

LIMBS: The forelegs are well separated by the chest, which protrudes, and, in general, the limbs are well muscled, especially the hindquarters, endowed with strong bones and good joints, which favors their great ability to jump on its vertical at a great height. The feet are very fine and of the type called hare’s.

GATHER: Both in the trot and in the gallop it is very fast, since it moves the extremities at great speed.

SKIN: It is very thin and is attached to the body. It never has a very marked skin, or double chin, or other folds. The hair is short and fine. And the main color of the coat is black and tan with various degrees of the extent of black on tan and the hue of the tan, since it is fiery in some cases or more matte and tan in others. The presence of white spots of variable extension is also frequent. A brown and tan color mutation can also occur, and therefore also white and orange.
